Alcon stops glaucoma drug development

03 Jul 2009

Clinical Research

Alcon has finished its development of an eye drop therapy for reducing a common cause of glaucoma after trials showed the treatment did not have a significant effect on patients.

Anecortave acetate works by reducing intraocular pressure (IOP) associated with glaucoma but the company said there was not enough of an effect to warrant continuing developing it.

Sabri Markabi, Alcon's senior vice president of research and development and chief medical officer, said: "While the results show the possibility of alternative, longer-term delivery for glaucoma patients, we are disappointed that anecortave acetate did not prove to have sufficient IOP reduction efficacy to be a successful treatment."

He added that new ways to treat glaucoma remain among Alcon's top priorities.

Results were taken from a phase two trial which involved around 200 patients who were injected once with a higher dosage of anecortave acetate to see if the therapy would have a long-lasting effect.

Alcon will release its financial results for the second quarter of 2009 later this month when its president Kevin Buehler hosts a conference call.
