J&J: Study shows safety of contact lenses in children

17 Nov 2008

Clinical Research

Vistakon, a division of Johnson & Johnson (J&J) Vision Care, stated that a new study has demonstrated the safety of soft contact lenses in children.

The company said that wearing the lenses "does not result in clinically significant acceleration in the development of near-sightedness in children".

It also reported that the study had found they do not cause "relevant increases" in corneal curvature or axial length.

Dr Jeffrey Walline, leader of the Adolescent and Child Health Initiative to Encourage Vision Empowerment Study, which includes the latest research, commented that clinical trials have shown contact lenses to bring a number of benefits to children.

He suggested that parents and doctors should now have "greater confidence in presenting children with the option of contact lens wear" in light of the latest findings.

Meanwhile J&J recently announced the acquisition of HealthMedia, a company which offers an online health coach-style service.

It provides web-based advice across various areas, such as disease management, medicine compliance and behavioural strategies with the aim of improving health outcomes.
