Lundbeck begins neurological drug trials

18 Dec 2008

Clinical Research

Lundbeck is initiating phase-one trials of a drug which has previously been found to have significant effects on neurological disorders in animals.

The pharmaceuticals firm will test Lu AA38466 for safety and tolerability, with scientists aiming to determine the pharmacokinetic profile of the treatment in humans.

"Focus at Lundbeck Research is to discover innovative compounds that address unmet needs for patients. Lu AA38466 is an example of a new generation of compounds with a great potential for treatment of certain neurological conditions," said executive vice president Peter Høngaard Andersen, head of research at Lundbeck.

The company says the trial will reinforce its series of pharmaceuticals in clinical development.

Earlier this week, Lundbeck announced that it is continuing to develop the alcohol dependence drug, nalmefene, by entering it into phase-three trials.

The research will involve over 1,800 patients, randomly organised into treatment and placebo groups, following previous trials which showed the drug to be safe and well-tolerated.
