Merck and Galapagos sign 2.5m euro drug discovery deal

20 Apr 2009

Clinical Research

Merck and Galapagos have signed a 2.5 million euro (£2.2 million) deal to discover, develop and commercialise treatments for inflammatory diseases.

Under the terms of the deal, Merck will pay an upfront fee, giving it the option to acquire an exclusive license for each candidate drug created by Galapagos.

The Belgian firm stands to gain 192 million euros from Merck for achieving discovery, development and regulatory milestones, as well as payments for sales objectives and royalty earnings.

Galapagos will be responsible for pre-clinical development of the small molecule candidate drugs based on its novel targets and Merck could become involved in this process if it exercises its right to acquire the exclusive license to the medications.

"This new alliance with Merck in inflammatory diseases, our sixth pharma alliance to date, underscores the quality and versatility of Galapagos' target discovery platform," said Onno van de Stolpe, chief executive of the company.

Last week, Merck signed a deal with Santen Pharmaceuticals to gain exclusive commercial rights to a treatment for glaucoma and ocular hypertension.
