Merck study points to male benefits of cervical cancer vaccine

18 Nov 2008

Clinical Research

Merck has released clinical trial findings which appear to suggest men can obtain health benefits from the company's cervical cancer vaccine Gardasil.

According to the drugs giant, the jab prevented 90 per cent of external genital lesions caused by human papillomavirus types six, 11, 16 and 18.

The data was based on a phase-three study of men aged between 16 and 26.

Given that the trial is ongoing, Merck said additional results will be submitted to regulatory agencies around the world once they are available.

The company indicated it remains on track to submit a supplemenetal biologics licence application to the US Food and Drug Administration for the use of Gardasil in males aged from 9 to 26.

Merck recently announced its financial results for the third quarter of the year.

The firm posted worldwide sales of $5.9 billion (£3.9 billion) - a two per cent decrease on the same period in 2007.
