New drug works better than aspirin alone

Clinical Research
A new drug from Sanofi-Aventis and Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) has been proved to help patients at risk of stroke when used alongside aspirin.
The pharmaceutical firms say the results of a landmark study show patients with atrial fibrillation who cannot use oral anticoagulant medication can take the Plavix drug alongside aspirin and reduce their chance of having a major vascular event.
Data from the research shows the occurrence of an attack is reduced by 11 per cent, compared to using aspirin alone.
Stuart Connolly, principal investigator and managing director of the department of medicine at McMaster University in Canada, says: "For patients with atrial fibrillation who are at increased risk for stroke but cannot take oral anticoagulants, these findings suggest a potential change in clinical practice."
Jean-Pierre Lehner, chief medical officer of Sanofi-Aventis, says the results are of "major interest" for people with atrial fibrillation who are at higher risk of having strokes and related illnesses.
BMS has recently released results showing its diabetes drug dapagliflozin produced "clinically meaningful reductions" in glycemic measures in type-2 patients.
