Obesity drug in phase-three trials

24 Dec 2008

Clinical Research

Takeda Pharmaceuticals has commenced phase-three clinical trials of an obesity drug.

Japanese-based Takeda will begin the double-blind study of ATL-963, which it is thought will be an agent in the treatment of obesity and related diabetes as it reduces absorption of fat, thereby causing weight loss.

In 2004, the firm acquired the rights to produce and commercialise the drug in Japan from Alizyme, in a deal which sees it gaining any royalties on future sales of the product in the country.

Masaomi Miyamoto, general manager of Takeda's pharmaceutical development division, said he was pleased that the trials are going ahead.

"It is said that obesity is closely related to and a serious risk factor for diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidemia and the need for treatment of obesity has attracted considerable social attention," he added.

This week, the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare approved Takeda's drug, Actos, which is used to treat type-two diabetes.
