Phase III liver cancer drug trials announced

02 Jun 2009

Clinical Research

Bayer, Roche and Onyx Pharmaceuticals have launched their latest tests into a treatment for liver cancer.

The firms are beginning Phase III trials into the Nexavar drug, which is seen as a possible course of action against advanced hepatocellular carcinoma.

Around 700 patients with advanced liver cancer are expected to be used in the tests, with a random placebo control used to determine whether survival is prolonged when the drug is used in conjunction with Tarceva.

Dimitris Voliotis, managing director and vice president for Nexavar Clinical Development at Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceutical, said that the drug is the "only approved targeted therapy with efficacy and tolerability in liver cancer".

He added: "We look forward to seeing the potential of combining Nexavar with another effective cancer treatment, Tarceva, in treating this disease and further extending the lives of patients."

In other news, Bayer Shering has released results from its first two phase trials of an oral multi-kinase inhibitor.
