Roche treatment helps adolescent weight loss

05 Sep 2006

Clinical Research

Roche has announced that its Xenical (orlistat) treatment has been proven to encourage weight loss and help improve patients' quality of life and self-esteem.

The Swiss pharmaceuticals firm made the announcement at the International Congress on Obesity (ICO) in Sydney, Australia this week, describing the positive effects the treatment has on obese young people.

Xenical works by preventing the absorption of dietary fat in the gut, and has been proven safe in more than 100 phase III/IV trials, covering over 30,000 patients.

Professor Jean-Pierre Chanoine, who led the Roche study, said: "The problem of adolescent obesity has reached alarming levels, with dire health consequences.

"It's reassuring to know we have a safe and effective treatment option with Xenical. The significant benefits seen in adolescents who respond early also provide a useful predictor for long-term treatment success," he added.

The trials showed average weight loss of 2.4kg in 12-16 year old patients treated for a year, compared with only 0.4kg in those receiving the placebo.

Significant improvements in self-perception were also noted, with those subjects taking Xenical seeing a range of quality of life gains.

Roche is based in Basel, Switzerland and employs over 70,000 people worldwide.
