Sanofi-Aventis calls for action against swine flu

French drug giant Sanofi-Aventis is to donate 100 million swine flu vaccines to the World Health Organisation (WHO) as it backs up its calls for solidarity as the fight against the outbreak intensifies.

The company made the announcement at the Pacific Health Summit, which a summit to discuss health issues and is being held in Seattle this week.

Christopher Viehbacher, chief executive officer of the pharmaceutical company, said: "Exceptional times request exceptional responses. We need to act responsibly and we all have to play our part."

Mr Viehbacher also supported the WHO's call for action to fight the flu pandemic and said it was the collective responsibility of the drugs and pharmaceutical industry to unite and fight the outbreak.

Sanofi-Aventis said its donation of 100 million doses of vaccine is intended to help the outbreak in developing countries which are trying to deal with the disease.

The French company has previously given its support to public health services during the pandemic and has increased its development of new flu vaccines.
