The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given the all clear to Sanofi-Aventis' latest drug which treats heart conditions.

Multaq is designed to help improve management of atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter disorders and, according to Sanofi-Aventis, is the first drug approved in the US that helps reduce the need for hospitalisation of patients.

Christopher Viehbacher, chief executive officer of Sanofi-Aventis, said: "The FDA approval of Multaq is an important milestone in the management of atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter that demonstrates the commitment of Sanofi-Aventis to provide patients and physicians with important new medicines."

He added that the company is proud of its ability to bring innovative therapies to the market and help increase the range of treatments available to treat heart conditions.

Sanofi-Aventis has recently taken part in a meeting to discuss how the pharmaceutical industry can help combat childhood cancer in the world's poorest countries, which was held in Senegal this week.
