Otsuka launches new formulation of schizophrenia drug

25 Mar 2009

Medical Affairs

Otsuka is to launch a new formulation of its anti-psychotic drug, Abilify, in Japan on April 10th.

The latest version of the medication can be swallowed without water and is orange-flavoured and sweet so it is easier for patients to take if they have had trouble with previous agents.

Otsuka began selling Abilify in Japan in June 2006 and there are currently four formulations on the market.

Commenting on the launch, Dr Nakao Iwata, professor at the department of psychiatry at the Fujita Health University School of Medicine, said the new version is welcome for both healthcare professionals and patients.

"In the treatment of schizophrenia, it is vital to enhance adherence to prevent relapses," he added.

Dr Iwata referred to the need for sufferers of the illness to take a positive attitude to accepting their condition and actively seek treatment.

Last year, Otsuka expanded their collaboration with Galenea to discover and develop novel therapies for schizophrenia and other central nervous system diseases.
