US increases Tamiflu stockpile for Latin America and the Caribbean
03 Jul 2009
Medical Information
The US is to provide more than 400,000 treatment courses of the anti-viral drug Tamiflu to try and stem the outbreak of swine flu in the Caribbean and Latin America.
Kathleen Sebelius, the US Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, made the announcement and said that 420,000 courses will be given to the Pan-American Health Organisation (PAHO).
She said: "The US is committed to supporting and enhancing the health security in the region by reducing transmission and severity of illness. Viruses know no borders. The US recognises that a novel virus such as the H1N1 is a burden borne by all nations."
The decision comes after the PAHO requested partnership with the US as it attempts to increase the availability of Tamiflu in its member countries.
Roche has recently deployed emergency stockpiles of Tamiflu after the World Health Organisation asked for its help as the outbreak continues.
