Lexiva HIV treatment 'comparable' to Kaletra

18 Aug 2006

Clinical Research

A new study published by The Lancet found GlaxoSmithKline's Lexiva treatment to have comparable effects as Abbott Laboratories' Kaletra.

The research was conducted over 48 weeks on 878 treatment-naive HIV patients, and looked at the comparative effects of Lexiva and Kaletra (lopinavir/ritonavar) each administered twice daily in addition to Epzicoma (abacavir/lamivudine) once daily.

At the end of the 48 weeks 73 per cent of Lexiva patients and 71 per cent of Kaletra patients had HIV-1 RNA (vRNA) levels of less than 400 copies/mL, the primary endpoint of the study.

Joseph Eron, professor of medicine at the University of North Carolina, said in a GSK statement: "Protease inhibitors continue to be a key component of antiretroviral therapy and this new information reinforces the efficacy and safety of Lexiva for treatment-naive patients with HIV."

Furthermore, at the study's end 66 per cent of Lexiva patients had achieved vRNA levels under 50 copies/mL, compared with 65 per cent of the Kaletra patients.

GSK is the leading UK pharmaceutical company, with over 100,000 employees worldwide and its headquarters based in Middlesex.
