MS treatment research will continue

18 Aug 2006

Clinical Research

BioMS Medical, a Canadian pharmaceuticals firm, has received its fifth positive review from the independent Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB).

The phase II-III clinical trial, which includes sites in the UK, into secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) now has an official recommendation to continue.

MBP8298, the treatment under trial, is subject to regular reviews from the DSMB.

Kevin Giese, president and CEO of BioMS, said in a statement: "We continue to make excellent progress developing MBP8298 on multiple fronts."

"We currently have enrolled more than 300 patients in our pivotal phase II/III SPMS (secondary progressive multiple sclerosis) trial and remain on track to achieve full enrolment by year-end," he added.

Increasing research and development costs were blamed in recent financial results for increased losses, with a net loss of $9.1 million being recorded for the second quarter of 2006 compared with $3.5 for the same period last year.

MBP8298 is the company's lead technology, and has been consistently deemed safe by the DSMB.
