Organon enters into biopharmaceutical research agreement

Akzo Nobel's human health care subsidiary Organon has agreed a research collaboration with the Irish National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT).

The deal will focus on developing understanding and control techniques for glycosylation in CHO cell culture, drawing on the respective academic and business expertise of the two organisations.

Research is aimed at progressing from computer-based predictions and laboratory work through development to clinical practice.

David Nicholson, executive vice president of research and development at Organon, said in a statement: "This collaboration reinforces the strong commitment at Organon to research and development and alliances to expand and improve our biopharmaceutical franchise.

"NIBRT's unique focus on bioprocessing and its links to world-class researchers in Irish universities complements our own biotechnology research and development capabilities and should provide both parties with new insightsinto the biosynthetic mechanisms in cell cultures and ways to control them," he added.

Organon and NIBRT will share all costs associated with the collaborative process, the first such deal with industry announced since NIBRT's inception earlier this year.

NIBRT is based in Dublin and is based on collaboration between Irish universities, colleges and a range of partners in industry.
