Further clinical work on CoFactor, an investigational drug designed to increase the efficacy of existing chemotherapeutic agents, is set to begin according to Adventrx.
The drug is being developed as to assist 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) both by making it more effective at combating breast cancer, but also by reducing its toxicity and thus increasing patient tolerability.
The phase II work will look at how Adventrx's folate-based biomodulator drug works in patients who have not responded to anthracycline and taxane chemotherapies, as well as offering a more detailed safety profile.
"The initiation of this phase II clinical trial for CoFactor represents an important milestone in the global registration strategy for our lead product development program," said the chief executive officer of Adventrx, Evan Levine.
"The CoFactor and 5-FU regimen has demonstrated activity in multiple tumour types, including breast in a phase I clinical trial, and we have safety data fromother CoFactor studies in metastatic colorectal cancer that suggest CoFactor is well-tolerated," added the president of Adventrx, Dr James Merritt.
Breast cancer is responsible for 16 per cent of all diagnosed cancers, according to Cancer Research UK, causing over 12,000 deaths each year in the UK.
