Lundbeck launches Circadin in Germany
13 May 2008
Lundbeck has announced the launch of its insomnia treatment Circadin in Germany following approval by European regulators.
Denmark-based Lundbeck claims the drug is the first sleep medication to be launched in Europe since 1999.
"With a new mechanism of action that mimics the physiological profile of the body's own melatonin secretion, Circadin will be a highly valuable alternative to traditional sedative hypnotics, which share a number of drawbacks such as dependency and residual drowsiness," commented executive vice president Stig Lokke Pedersen.
Circadin gained approval from the European Commission in June 2007 and the company now plans to roll out the product to 14 other European markets this year.
The treatment contains melatonin, a hormone that is produced naturally by the pineal gland which is important in sleep regulation.
Lundbeck claims that Circadin helps patients sleep better and improves their alertness in the morning.
Earlier this month, the company reported strong first quarter growth, with profit from operations increasing by 41 per cent.
