Sanofi: Phase II cancer trials 'encouraging'

02 Jun 2008

Clinical Research

Sanofi-Aventis has announced that Phase II trials of its cancer vaccine TroVax have so far shown "encouraging" results.

The French pharmaceutical company has been testing the vaccine in patients with metastatic renal cancer in the study, which is expected to finish in 2009.

A total of 88 patients were given TroVax injections in combination with the standard therapy.

Dr Howard Kaufman of the Division of Surgical Oncology at Columbia University commented on the results: "Effector and regulatory T cell responses correlate with clinical outcome in metastatic renal cell carcinoma patients treated with [TroVax] vaccine and high-dose interleukin-2."

More than 150,000 people worldwide are diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma each year, which represents two per cent of all new cancer cases.

In the US and Europe, more than 33,000 people die from this type of cancer each year.

The drugmaker recently announced that it is joining with ThalesNano to work on a research and development programme in process chemistry technologies.
