Novartis says new drug shows breast cancer potential

02 Jun 2008

Clinical Research

Switzerland-based pharmaceutical company Novartis has presented findings from Phase II trials of RAD001, which suggest the treatment could increase the efficacy of other common breast cancer medications.

It was found that RAD001 helps tumours to shrink further when it is given in combination with letrozole to women with newly diagnosed hormone-positive breast cancer.

Novartis said that it is planning to start a new trial early next year to continue exploring the potential of the treatment in breast cancer.

"These remarkable early findings support exploring the potential of RAD001 in addressing unmet medical needs in women with HER2+ breast cancer in a larger randomised clinical trial," commented David Epstein, chief executive officer and president of Novartis Oncology.

Novartis recently had its multiple sclerosis treatment, Extavia, approved for sale in the European Union and the company announced that it plans to launch the treatment in the US and Europe early in 2009.
