GSK's Tykerb shows potential as breast cancer treatment
02 Jun 2008
Clinical Research
GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has announced the results of a Phase II trial into Tykerb, saying that it could be a potential therapy for breast cancer.
Dr Paolo Paoletti, senior vice-president of the Oncology Medicine Development Centre at GSK, said that therapies which target tumour cell signalling pathways "are the future of cancer treatment".
"The more we know about how and when to combine targeted therapies the closer we are to the ultimate goal - personalised treatment regimens that better fit the individual needs of patients," he commented.
Results from the trials are being presented at the annual American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Chicago from May 30th to June 3rd.
The UK-based pharmaceutical company recently said that it will give pilots and air traffic controllers who are trying to quit smoking free nicotine lozenges to help them, just as Pfizer's smoking cessation aid Chantix was taken off the list of safe treatments for people in those professions.
