Wyeth starts new trials for kidney cancer treatment

02 Jun 2008

Clinical Research

Pharmaceutical company Wyeth has begun new clinical trials which will compare Torisel against Avastin as a treatment for advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC).

Approximately 85 per cent of new cases of kidney cancer that are diagnosed each year in the US are RCC, of which 40 per cent are in the advanced stages.

Joseph Camardo, senior vice-president of Global Medical Affairs at Wyeth, commented that a number of treatments launched in recent years have led to improvements in the way that advanced kidney cancer is treated.

"In the Intoract study, we hope to learn more about whether combining Torisel with other agents in the first-line setting may further improve outcomes for patients with this devastating disease," Mr Camardo commented.

Roche and Genentech will also assist the study.

In conjunction with Progenics Pharmaceuticals, Wyeth recently announced that initial findings from its study of Relistor as a treatment for opioid-induced constipation showed positive results.
