Abbott's TriLipix shows 'positive' results

02 Jun 2008

Clinical Research

Abbott Laboratories has revealed that its cholesterol drug TriLipix has shown positive results in lowering 'bad' cholesterol in patients with unhealthy levels of lipids when combined with AstraZeneca's Crestor.
Peter Jones, fellow of the American College of Physicians, Methodist DeBakey Heart and Vascular Centre in Houston, said that people with multiple lipid problems may need a range of treatment options to help either reduce or increase the three key lipids - LDL, which is referred to as "bad" cholesterol, HDL, known as "good" cholesterol, and triglycerides.

Mr Jones, a lead investigator of the Phase III study, said: "Results from this study showed that TriLipix in combination with rosuvastatin significantly increased HDL, and decreased both LDL and triglycerides."

Abbott Labs recently found in clinical trials that its treatment Humira resulted in to long-term remission and clinical response in patients with Crohn's disease.

The company employs more than 68,000 people in over 130 countries around the world.
