Bristol-Myers Squibb and Pfizer start blood clot study
11 Jun 2008
Clinical Research
Bristol-Myers Squibb and Pfizer have started a new clinical trial of the experimental drug apixaban as a potential treatment for patients with blood clots in the veins of their legs or lungs.
Blood clots in these areas can lead to the potentially fatal condition of venous thromboembolism (VTE).
"The initiation of this apixaban Phase III trial represents Bristol-Myers Squibb's and Pfizer's commitment to furthering research in the treatment of VTE, a serious disease that affects 1.3 million people annually in the US and Europe," said Jack Lawrence, vice-president of Research and Development at Bristol-Myers Squibb.
He continued that currently the condition is often treated with vitamin K antagonists, which have several drawbacks, including being slow to act, needing regular monitoring and adjustment of the dosage, as well as interacting with a number of different foods and drugs.
In related news, Pfizer recently named Charles Triano as the company's new senior vice-president of Investor Relations.
