Roche obtains licence for anti-cancer drug

18 Jun 2008

Clinical Research

Roche has purchased the licence for an anti-cancer treatment for an initial payment of $50 million (£25.6 million).

The company is making the upfront payment to biotechnology firm ThromboGenics NV and research-based pharmaceutical company BioInvent International AB, which jointly developed the anti-cancer agent TB-403.

BioInvent and ThromboGenics could potentially receive up to €450 million (£230 million) over the course of the collaboration, dependent on certain development milestones being reached and the number of product sales.

Dan Zabrowski, global head of pharma partnering at Roche, commented that the company was looking forward to developing a strong working relationship with ThromboGenics and BioInvent.

Mr Zabrowski said: "This novel antibody TB-403 has the potential to play a major role in the treatment of cancer and we are committed to driving ahead with its development."

BioInvent's chief executive officer Svein Mathisen reported at the company's AGM in April that a phase-one trial had been successful for its anticoagulant TB-402, which has also been developed in conjunction with ThromboGenics.
