Boehringer Ingelheim has announced the chairman of its board of managing directors is to retire at the end of the year.
It says Dr Alessandro Banchi is leaving the company after more than 35 years' service and will be succeeded by the vice-chairman Dr Andreas Barner, who is currently responsible for research, development and medicine.
Dr Bert Tjeenk Willink will take over responsibility for marketing and sales on the board of managing directors, the company reports.
Christian Boehringer, chairman of the shareholders' committee, states: "Dr Banchi has fundamentally shaped Boehringer Ingelheim's entrepreneurial success as well as decisively driven forward its profitability and internationalisation, especially in the USA."
Boehringer adds that Dr Banchi has given the company great service, with important decisions being taken under his responsibility which involved "innovative medicines and therapies to benefit humankind".
Earlier this month, Boehringer revealed it has reached an agreement to acquire US biotechnology company Actimis Pharmaceuticals.
