GSK's combination vaccine gets approval

26 Jun 2008

Regulatory Affairs

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has had its combination vaccine for the prevention of diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis and polio approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

According to clinical trials, the Kinrix vaccine is about as effective as individual vaccines normally administered to prevent the diseases.

William Hitchcock, assistant clinical professor of Paediatrics, School of Medicine, pointed out that giving children a number of separate jabs can be stressful for them.

"By reducing the number of shots given in one visit, combination vaccines like Kinrix may make it easier for kids to meet school vaccination requirements and Centres for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations."

Wayde Weston, director of US Clinical Research and Development/Medical Affairs, GlaxoSmithKline, said that the vaccine contains the same Diphtheria and Tetanus Toxoids and Acellular Pertussis and Inactivated Poliovirus ingredients as two other treatments which have been used in the US "for many years".

GSK recently had its combination of Avodart and tamsulosin for the treatment of enlarged prostates approved by US regulators.
