FDA approves Pfizer's animal antibiotic

30 Jun 2008

Regulatory Affairs

Pfizer's cat and dog antibiotic drug Convenia has been granted approval by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the company reports.

It says it is the first and only antibiotic for dogs and cats available in a single veterinarian-administered injectable dose.

Convenia provides up to 14 days of antibiotic treatment in a single dose for the most common skin infections in dogs and cats, according to the company.

George Fennell, vice-president of the Companion Animal Division at Pfizer Animal Health, suggests it is a convenient option for pet-owners who may find it difficult to give pills to their animals several times a day.

He adds: "With Convenia, the pet gets the dose it needs right in the veterinarian’s office - so owners don't have to worry about when and how to give pills to their pets."

Last week, Pfizer invited members of the general public to listen to the forthcoming webcast of its conference call with investment analysts, which is to be held on July 23rd.
