Shire announces senior appointment

Shire has announced the appointment of Dr Jeffrey Jonas to the post of senior vice-president of Research & Development (R&D) for its speciality pharmaceuticals business.

The company said he will be responsible for establishing the strategic direction of his department's new product pipeline and the achievement of R&D milestones.

Dr Jonas has most recently served as executive vice-president at Isis Pharmaceuticals, where he has been in charge of clinical and pre-clinical development, regulatory affairs, quality assurance and compliance.

President of Shire's speciality pharmaceutical business Michael Cola stated that Dr Jonas will bring "scientific and commercial experience across a wide range of pharmaceutical and biologic areas" to the firm.

He added Shire is "fortunate to have someone with the breadth of experience of Dr Jonas" joining the company.

Meanwhile, the multinational is set to announce its financial results for the second quarter of the year on July 31st.
