Amgen reports positive osteoporosis trial data
28 Jul 2008
Clinical Research
Amgen has reported positive top-line results from a phase-three study of its denosumab drug in the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis.
It said the data showed a statistically significant reduction in the incidence of new vertebral fractures when compared with a placebo.
Furthermore, Amgen stated that there was a statistically significant reduction in the number of new non-vertebral and hip fractures.
The company's executive vice-president of research and development Dr Roger Perlmutter commented: "We are encouraged by the magnitude and consistency of the treatment effect and pleased with the safety results."
Dr Ethel Siris, director of the Toni Stabile Osteoporosis Center at Columbia University Medical Centre and immediate past president of the National Osteoporosis Foundation, said: "I am particularly excited about these findings because they indicate that denosumab may offer an important new option for patients."
Earlier this month, Amgen announced its intent to comply with the revised Code on Interactions with US Healthcare Professionals, which has been unveiled by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America.
The updated voluntary code is scheduled to take effect from January next year.
