    Bayer group sales up 3.6%

    30 Jul 2008

Bayer has said its group sales increased by 3.6 per cent to just over 8.5 billion euros (£6.7 billion) in the second quarter of the year compared with the same period in 2007.

The company's CropScience division reported the strongest levels of growth in what Bayer states was an "outstanding" performance for that part of the business.

Sales in the pharmaceuticals and healthcare strands were fairly stable, with limited growth in each area.

Management board chairman Werner Wenning commented on the results: "We are very satisfied with our performance overall.

"We succeeded in significantly improving our operating result although exchange rates remained unfavourable and energy and raw material costs continued to rise."

Meanwhile, Bayer has just revealed that its collaborative partner Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research and Development has submitted a new drug application to the US Food and Drug Administration for the anticoagulant treatment Xarelto.

Approval is being sought for the medicine's use in preventing deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in patients undergoing hip or knee replacement surgery.
