Wyeth and Elan present mixed Alzheimer's data

31 Jul 2008

Clinical Research

Wyeth and Elan have said results from a phase-two study of bapineuzumab in the treatment of mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease "did not attain statistical significance in the pre-specified endpoints in the overall study population".

However, the companies said clinically-meaningful benefits were demonstrated in important sub-groups.

Overall, the firms stated that the data supports the ongoing design of a phase-three study, which will be informed by the latest findings.

Gary Stiles, chief medical officer at Wyeth, said "much more" will be learned in the phase-three trials and suggested that the phase-two results "represent scientific validation of our decision to move rapidly" on to the next stage.

He commented: "We are encouraged by these results and we'll achieve greater insight as we move forward."

Last week, Wyeth revealed its worldwide net revenue for the second quarter of the year was $5.9 billion (£3 billion).

Chairman, president and chief executive officer Bernard Poussot expressed pleasure at the company's volume growth and commented that it was moving forward with momentum.
