GSK in phase-three leukaemia drug study

01 Aug 2008

Regulatory Affairs

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and Genmab have announced "positive" top-line results from an interim analysis of a phase-three study of the leukaemia drug ofatumumab.

The study assessed the medicine's efficacy in two difficult-to-treat groups of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL).

Ofatumumab, which is not yet approved in any country, was also said to have been generally well-tolerated by participants in the clinical trial.

Kathy Rouan, vice-president and medicine development leader at GSK, said: "These very encouraging results suggest that ofatumumab has the potential to provide benefits to CLL patients with very refractory disease and limited treatment options."

Lisa Drakeman, chief executive officer of Genmab, commented that the findings represent a "significant achievement" for her company.

Meanwhile, GSK has recently announced a five-year, $25 million-plus (£12.7 million) collaboration with the Harvard Stem Cell Institute.

The link-up aims to progress the development of new medicines in the area of stem cell science.
