Novartis reveals blood pressure drug approvals
04 Aug 2008
Novartis has revealed that two blood pressure medicines have been granted approval by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Diovan and Exforge are approved as initial therapies for patients likely to need multiple drugs to adequately control their blood pressure.
The company has referred to research which suggests up to 80 per cent of patients may need multiple medications to help them reach blood pressure goals.
Kenneth Jamerson, professor of medicine in the department of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Michigan Healthcare System, stated that the drugs will give doctors flexibility in the treatments they can offer.
He added: "Patients will also benefit, as they may be able to get their blood pressure effectively and quickly under control with a single pill."
Novartis last week reported tests which had shown that Exforge - a combination of Diovan and amlodipine - had brought nearly twice as many patients with high baseline blood pressure down to a healthier blood pressure goal compared to amlodipine alone.
