Pfizer: Lipitor 80 mg significantly reduces heart attacks

07 Aug 2008

Clinical Research

Pfizer says the 80 milligram (mg) dose of Lipitor has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke compared with the 10 mg dose.

It reported there was a 35 per cent lower risk of such events in patients with heart disease, type-two diabetes and chronic kidney disease.

When used in patients with heart disease and type-two diabetes but without chronic kidney disease, the 80 mg dose reduced the risk by ten per cent.

Dr James Shepherd, clinical academic consultant in the department of pathological biochemistry at the University of Glasgow medical school, commented that there is an "alarming trend" in the US of a dramatic increase in the prevalence of chronic kidney disease as the rates of diabetes have risen.

He said the latest study supports the guidelines which recommend using statins to aggressively lower LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) in order to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Pfizer recently reported revenues of $12.1 billion (£6.2 billion) for the second quarter of the year - up from $11.1 billion in the same period of 2007.
