GSK claims encouraging COPD drug data

15 Aug 2008

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has said a study shows that treatment with a combination of Seretide and Advair can slow the progression of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

It stated that the findings published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine show the therapy significantly lowered lung decline in patients when compared with a placebo.

According to the drugs giant, it is the first time that a medicine has been shown to slow the decline in lung function and have an impact on the progression of the disease.

Darrell Baker, senior vice-president of the respiratory medicines development centre at GSK, said: "It is good news for patients that treatment with Seretide/Advair has for the first time been shown to help slow the progression of their disease, in addition to improving their lung function and reducing exacerbations."

He added that the company is "excited" about the study's findings.

Meanwhile, GSK recently announced the beginning of a collaboration with the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, which has the aim of developing new medicines through the use of stem cell technology.
