Novo Nordisk reports positive diabetes drug data

26 Sep 2008

Clinical Research

Novo Nordisk has said positive new liraglutide clinical trial results have been published in the Lancet.

According to the company, the data showed that when liraglutide was taken alone it produced statistically-significant and sustained improvements in blood sugar control in early type-two diabetes patients, compared with the widely-used glimepiride.

Furthermore, it said that liraglutide was found to be associated with weight loss, reduced systolic blood pressure and lower rates of hypoglycaemia after a year of treatment.

"Publication of this data in the Lancet means that more physicians will have access to these key results on liraglutide's efficacy as monotherapy in the treatment of type-two diabetes," commented principal study investigator Alan Garber.

Novo Nordisk said no major hypoglycaemic episodes were reported during the study, while the most common gastrointestinal-related adverse events were nausea, diarrhoea and vomiting.

Headquartered in Denmark, Novo Nordisk employs around 26,000 staff across 79 nations and markets its products in 180 countries around the world.
