Bayer claims progress in hypertension drug trial

06 Oct 2008

Bayer has said it is making progress in the clinical trial programme of riociguat in the treatment of pulmonary hypertension.

The company stated it had received positive data from the phase-two trial stage and as a result will move into phase-three trials.

According to the firm, riociguat is the first member of a new class of vasodilating agents called soluble guanylate cyclase stimulators.

"Riociguat has the potential to overcome limitations of current standards of care in pulmonary hypertension," said Kemal Malik, head of global development and member of the executive committee of Bayer HealthCare.

He suggested that the agent is "an example of the kind of novel approach to treating cardiovascular disease to which Bayer is committed".

Bayer recently announced that the European commission has granted marketing approval for its anticoagulant drug Xarelto.

The approval relates to the use of the once-daily Xarelto for the prevention of venous blood clots in adult patients undergoing elective hip or knee replacement surgery.
