Avastin study 'did not meet primary endpoint'

06 Oct 2008

The primary endpoint was not achieved in a recent clinical trial of Avastin, Genentech and OSI Pharmauticals have reported.

When used in combination with Tarceva to treat patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer whose disease had progressed following platinum-based chemotherapy, Avastin did not improve overall survival compared to the use of Tarceva in combination with placebo.

However, "clear evidence of clinical activity" was seen as regards the secondary endpoints of progression-free survival, the firms added.

"We are disappointed this study did not show an improvement in survival for patients with advanced lung cancer who have a poor prognosis and a disease that is extremely difficult to treat," said Hal Barron, Genentech's chief medical officer and senior vice-president of development.

But he added that the companies had gained encouragement from the evidence that the combination of Avastin and Tarceva does show clinical activity.

Genentech recently entered into a collaboration agreement with GlycArt and Roche over an investigational cancer treatment.

Under the agreement, the firms will jointly develop and commercialise GlycArt's GA101 molecule for the potential treatment of haematological malignancies and other oncology-related B-cell disorders such as non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
