Shire colitis drug 'demonstrates steady medicine release'

07 Oct 2008

Clinical Research

A multidisciplinary analysis of Shire's ulcerative colitis drug Lialda appears to suggest the product has demonstrated a steady release of medicine.

Researchers investigated factors such as transit, disintegration of tablets and coating thickness which may affect a consistent release of the active substance, 5-aminosalicylate acid (5-ASA).

They stated that the clinical significance of the data has not been established.

Srini Tenjarla, lead study investigator and senior director of pharmaceutical sciences at Shire, pointed out that both the time of the initial release and the duration of the continued release are important factors in this type of medicine.

The scientist continued: "Now, through a combination of analyses, we have data that shows Lialda demonstrated a steady 5-ASA release throughout the entire colon."

Shire is a speciality pharmaceutical company founded in 1986 and currently focuses on three main areas: attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder; gastrointestinal conditions; and genetic disorders.
