    07 Oct 2008

The European Respiratory Society (ERS) has announced that Dr Esther Barreiro has won this year's award for research in the field of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim, this year's award and prize of 50,000 euros (£38,900) goes to Dr Barreiro of the Municipal Institute of Medical Investigation at the Hospital del Mar in Barcelona to be used for scientific research projects investigating COPD.

Dr Barreiro won the prize for her study examining the specific role of oxidative stress in the respiratory and peripheral muscle dysfunction of COPD patients.

ERS president Leonardo Fabbri expressed thanks to all those who had submitted entries into this year's competition.

He continued: "In particular, we congratulate Esther Barreiro for her excellent work and extend our thanks to Boehringer Ingelheim, a leader in the research and treatment of COPD, for making this award possible."

Earlier this week, the German drugs giant revealed that findings from a clinical trial demonstrated that COPD patients given tiotropium experienced sustained improvements in lung function for up to four years.
