US approves new Risperdal injection site

A new injection site for the schizophrenia drug Risperdal Consta has been approved in the US, Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals has said.
The Johnson & Johnson company stated that the Food and Drug Administration has approved the administering of the injection into the deltoid muscle of the arm.
Risperdal Consta had previously received approval as a gluteal injection only.
Dr Mohammed Bari, of Synergy Research Centre in San Diego and one of the investigators in the recent Risperdal Consta trial, suggested that the news will be welcomed by many patients who may now have a choice of where to receive their medicine.
He continued: "The fact that they will just have to roll up their sleeves and get the shot in their arm is going to be a big plus for many patients with schizophrenia."
Meanwhile Johnson & Johnson has announced the appointment of Sheri McCoy to the role of worldwide chairman of its pharmaceuticals group, with effect from January 1st next year.
