Boehringer in type-two diabetes drug development

Boehringer Ingelheim has announced it is moving into type-two diabetes drug development.
The company has unveiled a pipeline of novel oral antidiabetic compounds which are at the phase-two and phase-three stage of clinical testing.
Type-two diabetes is the second new therapeutic field to be entered by the firm inside two years, having revealed its new cancer drug development programme in 2006.
Dr Andreas Barner, vice-chairman of the board of managing directors responsible for research, development and medicine, said the company was announcing its new type-two diabetes research and development work "with great pleasure".
He continued: "Boehringer Ingelheim is scientifically, economically and intellectually well-prepared to successfully [broaden] its diabetes pipeline to meet the needs of physicians and their patients."
Meanwhile the firm revealed earlier this month that it had signed a licensing agreement with Japanese firm Evec for a fully-human therapeutic antibody programme.
Boehringer said it is to gain exclusive worldwide development and commercialisation rights for the complete programme.
