Abbott reports positive fistula treatment data
22 Oct 2008
Clinical Research
Abbott has claimed positive data from a clinical trial of its Humira product.
The firm said Humira was shown to provide long-term treatment of fistulas and that most patients with moderate to severe Crohn's disease experienced fistula healing at three years.
A fistula - which is a tunnel that forms between the intestine and other parts of the body - develop in up to one in three people with Crohn's disease, according to Abbott.
Jean-Frederic Colombel, professor of gastroenterology at Hopital Huriez in Lille, commented: "Treatments that promote fistula healing are important - particularly for difficult to treat patients."
Rebecca Hoffman, divisional vice-president of global pharmaceutical research and development at Abbott, said: "We are encouraged by these results and will continue to study Humira in patients with Crohn's disease."
Earlier this month Abbott reported "strong" sales and earning growth in the third quarter of the year.
The company reported that its worldwide medical products sales increased by just over 25 per cent.
