Pfizer opens stem cell research unit

14 Nov 2008

Clinical Research

Pfizer has opened a new facility which will focus on stem cell research.

The drugs giant said the independent research unit, known as Pfizer Regenerative Medicine, will aim to develop a new generation of medicines to repair failing organs and treat degenerative diseases.

It is expected to employ a total of around 70 researchers and will be co-located at its biotech hubs in Cambridge, England and Cambridge, Massachusetts.

"Pfizer Regenerative Medicine represents a great opportunity to focus world-class research in a field that holds considerable promise for biomedical science," said Rod MacKenzie, head of worldwide research at Pfizer.

The unit is to be led by the firm's chief scientific officer Ruth McKernan, who revealed she is "very excited" to be taking on the role.

Meanwhile the company has announced that its overactive bladder treatment Toviaz has been granted regulatory approval in the US, a medicine which is already available in Europe.

According to the firm, an estimated one in six Americans experience the condition which remains "highly undertreated".
