Potential cancer drug moves into phase-three testing

17 Nov 2008

Clinical Research

Boehringer Ingelheim said it has progressed a potential cancer treatment into phase-three clinical testing.

The company stated that Vargatef will be evaluated as a second-line therapy in combination with standard chemotherapy agents in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer.

Vargatef, a triple angiokinase inhibitor, will be assessed in two studies entitled Lume-Lung One and Lume-Lung Two.

According to principal trial investigator Dr Nasser Hanna, there is an "urgent" need to develop "newer, smarter" treatment options for patients with the condition.

The expert added: "While our battle to conquer cancer continues, lung cancer remains the leading cause of worldwide cancer deaths despite the availability of numerous therapeutic options."

Boehringer Ingelheim recently reported positive data from the clinical trial of another potential anti-cancer agent.

The firm said BI 6727 showed "encouraging" results in patients with advanced tumours who had not responded to other treatments.
