Bayer plans to build new Chinese plant

    17 Nov 2008

Bayer MaterialScience has unveiled plans to construct an additional chlorine recycling plant in Shanghai, China.

The company expects the new facility to be operational in 2010 and will be based at the Bayer Integrated Site Shanghai.

Based on the catalytic oxidation of hydrogen chloride using oxygen, the technology behind the process was developed by the Japanese firm Sumitomo Chemical and licensed to Bayer.

Peter Vanacker, head of the Polyurethanes Business Unit and member of the Executive Committee of Bayer MaterialScience, said: "By introducing this new chlorine recycling process at Bayer MaterialScience we continue to implement the best and most innovative process technologies to strengthen our leadership position in the polyurethane industry."

Meanwhile, the Bayer Group has reported a "strong" performance in the third quarter of the year and has reaffirmed its financial guidance for 2008.

It reported that sales during the quarter were just over 7.9 billion euros (£6.8 billion) - two per cent higher than in the same period last year.
