Novartis hails 'sustained R&D investment'

Pharmaceutical firm Novartis has said it is reaping the benefits of "sustained" investment in its research and development (R&D) function.
The company confirmed it has 88 new molecular entities in its exploratory pipeline, which represents a 40 per cent increase since 2005.
Novartis indicated that it is prioritising its drug discovery efforts in conditions which have "greatest patient need coupled with strong molecular understanding of the disease".
Mark Fishman, president of the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research, remarked: "Our strategy is working to deliver more effective medicines to patients rapidly."
He suggested that the company has been able to "dramatically" increase the "size and power" of its R&D pipeline.
Last month, Novartis revealed it had reached a definitive agreement to acquire the pulmonary drug delivery business unit of Nektar Therapeutics.
The firm said the move would strengthen its ability to develop medicines which are delivered via the lungs.
