Merck claims positive Januvia data

24 Nov 2008

Clinical Research

Merck has reported encouraging data from a clinical trial of diabetes drug Januvia.

The drugs giant said the medicine significantly reduced blood sugar levels in elderly patients with type-two diabetes.

In addition, Merck stated there were no reports of hypoglycaemia in the study of 206 patients aged between 65 and 96 years.

Lead study investigator Nir Barzilai said: "The elderly population presents challenges for the treatment of type-two diabetes, as various factors can affect the ability to lower these patients' blood sugar to target levels."

Merck recently announced its financial results for the third quarter of the year.

The company posted worldwide sales of $5.9 billion (£4 billion), which represented a decrease of two per cent on the same period in 2007.

Net income for the third quarter of 2008 was just under $1.1 billion, compared to just over $1.5 billion in the same period last year.
