Fibromyalgia therapy shows 'positive' results

28 Nov 2008

Clinical Research

Jazz Pharmaceuticals and UCB have reported positive results from a clinical study of a potential fibromyalgia medicine.

The companies stated that sodium oxybate achieved the phase-three study's primary endpoints by significantly reducing pain and fatigue, while also improving daily function.

According to the reported data, significantly more patients treated with the drug achieved 30 per cent of greater improvement in their pain compared to those treated with placebo.

"There is a significant unmet need in diagnosing and treating millions of patients with fibromyalgia," said Dr John Russell, one of the lead trial investigators.

He added: "Potential new treatments that address the various symptoms can have a significant impact on patients' quality of life."

Meanwhile UCB recently reported positive results from a clinical trial of a potential rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treatment.

The company said Cimzia generated significant clinical benefits both as a monotherapy and when administered in combination with methotrexate in adults with active RA.
